Teens help save woman from burning home

North Georgia Home Education Academy students Lauren Daniels, Kirsten Chester and Courtney Logan asked the driver, Daniels’ mother, to pull the vehicle over. When the girls exited the car and ran to the back of the house they realized the flames were not coming from burning trash, as they had suspected.
Seeing a vehicle parked in the driveway but seeing no one outside the home, Chester immediately called 911 and the other two girls began yelling for anyone inside to get out of the house.
“I was at home sick that day, just kind of laying in the bed all day,” said Davenport. “I thought I heard people’s voices and I got up and went outside. Then the smoke detector went off. There were four or five girls outside screaming for me to get out…I came out and realized the house was on fire, but they got in a circle and prayed for me and prayed for the fire workers. They wrapped their arms around me and stayed with me the whole time. They were like little angles.”
Davenport’s home was completely destroyed, and the Cherokee Northside Hospital employee said she lost all of her belongings.
“I didn’t have any renter's insurance. It was just one of those things where you keep putting it off and putting it off. I can tell you for sure I’ll have renter's insurance next time,” Davenport said.
According to Pickens County Fire Chief Bob Howard the cause of the fire has been determined accidental.
“But her smoke detector went off and people really need to realize that smoke detectors save lives,” he said.
Davenport is now living with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchild in Pickens until she is able to furnish another home, which she says she will rent.
According to Davenport, coworkers from the hospital have been offering donations to help her get back on her feet, and her daughter’s coworkers from Liberty Elementary School in Cherokee have also been giving support.
